Great Views for Dinner in Puerto Vallarta

by Abraham Gutiérrez |

Due to its privileged location nestled between the ocean and the Sierra Madras Mountains, Puerto Vallarta and its impressive bay can be appreciated from the heights of restaurants built on the hillsides, atop hotels or on towers specifically built to provide that special touch to the location.

Location, food, drinks and the best view! These are the reccomendations:

Prior to becoming a restaurant, it was the home of the González family for 20 years, and 21 years ago, they converted it to a family restaurant. They started out with three tables and now have three terraces, each of them providing spectacular views. A swimming pool and waterfall complement the picture. The staff if very friendly and a variety of live music is offered from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Although the house specialties are seafood, we recommend the beef steak palomar at $195 pesos.

How to get here? Aguacate 425-A, Col. Altavista, Mon-Sun 5:30pm-11:00pm. Tel. (322) 222-0795. (See El Palomar de los González reviews )

Serving European cuisine with a Mexican touch, dinner is served alfresco on the elegant multi-level terrace, where views of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay can be appreciated. Its intimate atmosphere, elegant décor, soft music, amazing sunsets and dinner under the stars are some of the ingredients in this culinary experience. They offer a large wine cellar and live jazz from 8:00pm to 11:00pm.

How to get here? Púlpito 377, Col. Altavista, Mon-Sun 5:30pm-11:30pm. Tel. (322) 222-3570. (See Vista Grill reviews )

Hands down the highest viewpoint in the region from its location high on a mountain overlooking the city and bay. Every dish is prepared over wood flames, even the handmade tortillas. A Filet Mignon is $285 pesos and seafood platter ample for 2 is $365 pesos. A cab up the mountain is about $100 pesos and there is a pre-charge of $50 pesos per person to get through the gate. Arrive early to see the entire city and Bay by day and night, and if you forget to bring something warm to wear after the breathtaking sunset, your server will lend you and handmade poncho or blanket.

How to get here? Road to la aguacatera Km 1.2, by Par Vial, Mon-Sun 1:00pm-11:00pm. Tel. 044 (322) 303-2104. (See Las Carmelitas reviews )

Located on the two top levels of Suites La Siesta hotel, the lower level has windows to enjoy the view, and the upper level is an outdoor terrace. This restaurant is known for their grilled dishes, cooked tableside. To start, try the Oysters Rockefeller for $110 pesos. Next, try the avocado cream soup for $60 pesos, and finish with a filet mignon for $215 pesos or a grilled lobster for $440 pesos.

How to get here? Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez & Miramar s/n altos, Downtown / Centro, Mon-Sun 5:00pm-11:00pm. Tel. (322) 222-1818. (See El Panorama reviews )

  • Ah Caramba!

Since 1995 they have delighted diners with the house special: grilled seafood. Its founder and owner, Señor Marco Polo, has over 30 years of culinary experience. In addition to the incredible sunsets, you will also enjoy home-style service. One of the recommendations is the Ah Caramba! fish fillet for $220 pesos.

Offering lunch and dinner, this restaurant’s Spanish kitchen prepares tapas in small portions to enjoy as appetizers or for sharing. One of their specialties is the Valencia paella, served for two, at $189 pesos per person. The facility offers two levels. The lower level does not offer much of a view because of adjacent buildings, but you can see much of the bay from the upper level. By reservation only.

This is one of the most traditional spots on the Marina Vallarta Malecon. As its name indicates, it sits atop a tower styled after a lighthouse. From its heights, one can see numerous docked yachts and other vessels. To accompany your drinks, they offer cold cut and cheese platters for two or three for $100 pesos, in addition to olives, mini pizzas and hotdogs for $30 pesos.
